STRATHALBYN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The town of Strathalbyn derived its name from two Gaelic words “Strath” – which means broad valley and “Albion” – which means hilly land. Affluent people from Scotland were the first settlers of Strathalbyn which dates back in 1839. Strathalbyn is situated 60 kilometres south of Adelaide out in the lovely Fleurieu Peninsula. This Historic Town lies along the picturesque Angas River and is well known as the Antique Centre of South Australia.
Strathalbyn is host to SA’s largest Collectors, Hobbies and Antique Fair which is held annually on the third weekend of August and where hundreds of sellers from all over Australia converge to sell their Antiques and Collectables to the general public.
We started our day trip at the Strathalbyn Visitor Information Centre it is also where you’ll find the railway station. The Strathalbyn railway station is one of the popular stops of SteamRanger Heritage Tourist train. We had a handful of brochures and tourist guides from the Information Centre about how we can tour around the streets of Strathalbyn. We asked the very helpful and accommodating staff at the centre where we can get the best coffee in town and she pointed us to High Street.
We then proceeded to the Appleseed Café at 30 High St. A great local café which has been rated 4.5 by the TripAdvisor.
This country café offers breakfast, lunch and a great cup of Mahalia Coffee.
Historic High Street happens to be home to numerous antique and craft shops. You’ll most likely to find that valuable treasure you’ve always been looking for in Strathalbyn’s High Street. We strolled in awe in the enormous collection of antiques and crafts in this lovely town. The whole stretch of High Street is filled with Antique and Craft Shops. Those priceless collections are absolutely full of character, charm and history. We will surely be back Strathalbyn.
On our way back home, we opted to take the Angas River Scenic Drive going to Stirling in Adelaide Hills. This historic route captures farmland scenery and picturesque estates. Here are some of the photos that we captured during the drive.
